At Mabul Island and Kapalai, diving is all about diversity and interesting critters, rather than great visibility and big fish. Although there are some interesting reefs, they are not a patch on those of Sipadan nearby. But the mix of different habitats around Mabul and Kapalai means a great diversity of life and these islands have become well known for unusual species and ‘muck’ critters. There are even artificial reefs around Mabul and Kapalai that have attracted a great deal of life - including giant groupers for those that need their big fish fix!\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Cp>A typical dive on Mabul or Kapalai might mean hunting for leaf scorpionfish, frogfish, ribbon eels, different crustaceans and ghost pipefish. Blue ring octopus are also commonly found here. The sheltered sandy bays are home to more sought after ‘muck’ critters including the elusive mimic octopus, Ambon scorpionfish, frogfish, flamboyant cuttlefish, sea horses and some unusual nudibranchs. They are super well organized, considerate, informed, informative and obliging when asked for specific arrangements. All of the Dive Masters were superlative.  All personnel seem to work well as a team to provide a safe and enjoyable experience.  Special thanks to Azlan for taking care of me.  While Sipadan is a wonderful dive site because of the drop off, very healthy coral and visits by pelagic fauna, the other dive sites have unique attractions.  However, the government has applied a high cost to visit Sipadan Island. I encourage divers to take advantage of the other dive sites, especially the night dives and Kapalai, and save some of the cost of many visits to Sipadan Island.","There were highlights at all of the diving sites. I would have to rate the night dives as a major highlight.","Scuba Junkie Sipadan is trying hard to be eco-friendly and neighbor friendly and still offer the experience that people want.  There are challenges that they are working hard to resolve. The food is a bit repetitive because of the lack of pork (Moslem community) and seafood (lack of availability of sustainably caught fish) and beef is expensive. I´m not a huge fan of spicy food. That leaves chicken in many forms, and, lately, pasta dishes in addition to rice. They are making progress, I certainly did not go hungry!  They might want to add some deserts, e.g. ice cream, puddings, etc. I understand that a barbecue is planned. The bungalow has good air conditioning.  Fresh towels were available. The hot water and shower could be better.  I understand that they have installed solar power for most purposes, which I admire.  And the fresh water supply is not easy to maintain because of the location.  Knowing that makes up for the minor shortcomings. But I have huge respect for their efforts, not least the clean up efforts (which is a challenge, given the lack of effective waste management and recycling infrastructure on Mabul).  The other sustainabiliity efforts are admirable, especially the turtle hatchery\u002Frelease activities. I certainly hope to support and encourage them to stick to their commitments.
